The tomb of the Apostle St. James in Compostela has been the destination of pilgrims from all over the world since the Middle Ages.

Undoubtedly, the most traditionally rooted route is the French Way. But to reach it, pilgrims had to follow other secondary routes, such as the Jacobean Route of the Ebro. Pilgrims from the Mediterranean consolidated this route along the Ebro from Tortosa to Gandesa, Caspe, Zaragoza, Tudela, Alfaro and Calahorra to Logroño. It is really the Roman road that for more than two thousand years has linked Tarraco with Astorga, a historic communications axis that reveals to the traveller the lands and people of Catalonia, Aragon, Navarre and La Rioja.

The Jacobean Route of the Ebro is a pilgrimage route on the rise. In recent years, the associations of the Camino de Santiago in these autonomous communities have begun to coordinate their efforts to disseminate and protect this historic pilgrimage route.

The Ebro Way offers pilgrims its tradition, its art and culture, its history and its gastronomy. In this way it compensates for the effort of walking, the fatigue of each day that fills the Jacobean spirit with meaning. All this with the river Ebro, an ancient route for people and goods, offering itself to the pilgrim as an exceptional guide on his journey to the tomb of the Apostle.

Arrúbal is in stage 16, which begins in Alcanadre and ends in Logroño, the meeting point with the French Way, and with a total distance of 20 Kms. It is possibly the hardest and most rugged stage. Five kilometres from the start in Alcanadre, a farmyard on our right, the track crossing and the San Martín de Berberana estate are the prelude to Arrubal. From here onwards, along a completely flat road and with the railway always on our left, we finally reach the capital of La Rioja.

In Arrúbal we have a Municipal Hostel for all pilgrims to rest. Click here for more information.
